Certificate in Global Public Health

The Certificate in Global Public Health provides MPH and MS students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to confront and successfully address emerging global health problems. Upon completion, students are better prepared for international careers in government, health care agencies, industry, and academic institutions. International students will be better prepared to return to their home countries and work in health ministries, international governmental agencies, and other health care organizations.

Fall and spring admissions are offered for the Certificate in Global Public Health. The deadline for admission to the in the fall is October 1st and the deadline for admission in the spring is February 1st. Students will apply separately to an MPH or MS degree and to the Certificate in Global Public Health. With proper planning, the Certificate in Global Public Health can be completed alongside the MPH Professional Enhancement Program (PEP), MPH Comprehensive Program, or the MS Program.

As part of the Certificate in Global Public Health, MPH students complete a global applied practice experience. MS students complete a global health research thesis.

Students in the certificate for global public health must meet at least one competency in their Applied Practice Experience. It is crucial that students meet all learning outcomes throughout their degree program, most of which can be met through the required coursework.
G1 Demonstrate knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) and their contribution to the health of populations globally, as well as the influence of SDH (including economic, political and environmental) on programmatic approaches in international settings.
G2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the major causes of morbidity and mortality around the world, and explain how the risk for disease varies within and across regions.
G3 Describe the roles and relationships of the major entities influencing global health and development, and how they work to address communicable and noncommunicable diseases, including injury, given context specific challenges within countries and regions.
G4 Demonstrate an ability to use systems thinking to analyze programs at the local, national and international levels.
G5 Apply ethical reasoning to the design, implementation, or evaluation of global health programs, policies, or practice.

About the Global Applied Practice Experience
