About the funding opportunities
Industrial Hygiene Traineeship
Students in the program pursuing the Industrial Hygiene concentration are eligible for funding through a traineeship. To qualify, students must be citizens or resident aliens of the United States.
Eight traineeships are awarded per year to new or continuing students across MPH, MS and PhD degrees. Prospective students need to apply to the Industrial Hygiene MPH degree program, the Industrial Hygiene MS degree program, or the EOHS PhD concentration and indicate an interest in doing research related to industrial hygiene in their application materials. All applicants will be automatically considered for the traineeship.

Occupational Safety Traineeship
Traineeship are awarded to applicants accepted into the MS and PhD programs in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, pursuing the Occupational Safety concentration. To qualify, students must be citizens or resident aliens of the United States.

About the funding opportunities
All students admitted to the Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health program are considered trainees. Trainees are eligible for the following funding opportunities:
- 3 Irving Harris Scholars Awards are given to first-year MPH students (comes with a tuition waiver and an hourly RA position), awarded annually
- 2 MPH Maternal and Child Health Scholars earn one-time awards ranging from $2000 – $5000, awarded annually
- Smaller Irving Harris and Maternal and Child Health Stipends that all trainees can apply for each semester. These awards typically range from $500-$2500.
- Travel Awards to attend professional development opportunities that all trainees can apply for continuously throughout the year.

Students who apply for the concentration are automatically considered for this funding opportunity.

Maternal and Child Health PhD Scholar
Each year, a PhD student from the Community Health Sciences Division who chooses to pursue a doctoral degree that focuses on the health and well-being of women, children, or families is selected as a Maternal and Child Health PhD Scholar. The division defines Maternal and Child Health broadly to include the health of women not only related to reproductive health and child-bearing. These students are chosen carefully by a faculty committee on the basis of their research interests, accomplishments and passion for Maternal and Child Health.
Scholars receive a stipend ranging from $2000 – $5000, mentoring from Maternal and Child Health faculty, leadership coaching and funding for travel to conferences and other relevant meetings.
Information about this opportunity will be sent to all students who are accepted into the Maternal and Child Health concentration. Students interested in consideration for the award should contact Cindy San Miguel at csanmig2@uic.edu. Students’ SOPHAS applications will be reviewed for consideration, and no further application is needed. Selected students will be invited to participate in an interview process.
