This presentation will provide an overview of the main steps of analyzing a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The main example will be a 2-group x 3-time factorial longitudinal design, one of the most common RCTs designs. The emphasis will be conceptual rather than computational, although some concrete examples will be shown. Attention will be given to the assumptions of the main analytical strategies and how those are incorporated into the analysis. Various online and campus resources will be indicated.Data Science Theory meets Health Science Applications

Global Health (GH) Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Activity [7200AA24RFA00008]
Sponsor: United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Funding amount: $321.5M
Internal concept paper deadline: April 23, 2024 by 5:00 PM CT
Sponsor application deadline: May 29, 2024 by 9:00 AM ET
Eligible organizations may submit only one (1) application in response to this RFA as the Prime Applicant. The proposed persons for the Key Personnel positions may be included on more than one (1) application.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plans to invest in a five-year cooperative agreement titled GH Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Activity to support countries in achieving desired improvements in health and development outcomes.
The GH SBC Activity will build upon current USAID investments in SBC research and programming, including both global and bilateral projects, to guide integration of SBC evidence and theory in development programming, support generation and use of new learning, strengthen local technical and organizational capacity, and drive local leadership of SBC programming for better, broader, and more sustainable results. The project will fulfill a global leadership function within SBC, working through new and existing partnerships to create opportunities for locally-driven, innovative, and cost-effective SBC programs; systematic integration of SBC best practices within public and private health systems; and generating, synthesizing, and catalyzing the application of evidence-based and theory-informed SBC in diverse program settings to accelerate achievement of global health and development goals.
The strategic objective of the project is to increase implementation of theory-informed, evidence based, locally-led SBC programming. While focused primarily on health, the project may address SBC needs in other sectors, with particular attention to areas of potential complementarity such as environmental conservation, agriculture, food security, and nutrition. Within the health sector, the project will maintain a substantive but non-exclusive focus on family planning, reproductive health (FP/RH) and reproductive empowerment; malaria; and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), with attention to emerging pandemic threats and other infectious diseases. Considerations of USAID priorities such as localization, gender integration, youth engagement/integration, health systems strengthening, the inclusion of LGBTQI+ people, the inclusion of people with physical and cognitive disabilities, engaging the voices, skills, and experiences of all—including marginalized and underrepresented groups such as racial, ethnic, and Indigenous communities— and climate change, will be a focus across the project.W.E.B. Data from the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program show that nearly 250,000 women are sharing their health data with researchers registered with the program and more than 145,000 of these participants have whole genome sequences (WGS) available for use in studies.
This makes All of Us an important dataset that can help researchers close gaps in understanding how different conditions affect women, which is the focus of recently-announced White House Executive Order and research initiative that directs a broad range of efforts to prioritize women’s health research. The data contributed by women participating in All of Us is poised to help researchers learn more about conditions that commonly affect women, including heart disease, breast and ovarian cancers, pain, endometriosis, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy and childbirth, chronic fatigue and more.
Women who participate in All of Us are not only helping researchers make new discoveries by contributing their data. The program is also returning genetic health-related research results to participants who choose to receive them to help them better understand their own health, including whether they may be at increased risk for certain conditions, like breast and ovarian cancers.

The NOFO will support projects that test prospective multi-sectoral preventive interventions that address social determinants of health in populations that experience health disparities. Maximum award for this bi-phasic grant is $4.75M over 7 years. Application due date: August 5, 2024.
- Proposed intervention projects are expected to have the following features:
Designed to prevent, reduce, or screen for one or more risk factors for one or more chronic or acute health conditions, including at least one common risk factor shared across multiple conditions (e.g., poor nutrition; high body mass index; low physical activity; tobacco, alcohol, or other substance use; air pollution; occupational risks; high systolic blood pressure; high fasting plasma glucose level; high LDL cholesterol level; impaired kidney function; poor sleep quality, etc.). - Modifies one or more SDOH beyond the individual level of influence (e.g., interpersonal, organizational, community, societal) as a mechanism of action to prevent or reduce risk factors. Interventions that only offer referrals to address an individual’s social needs (e.g., providing a patient with a referral to a food bank) rather than directly modifying SDOH beyond the individual level (e.g., improving the food environment in a community) are not responsive to this NOFO.
- Guided by a conceptual model identifying hypothesized pathways between the SDOH and other determinants being addressed, the risk factors to be modified, and health outcomes.
- Tests new or adapted interventions, novel combinations of multiple interventions, and/or new strategies to implement evidence-based interventions.
- Involves collaboration with organizations from two or more service sectors (e.g., health, public health, education, housing, labor, social services, child welfare, transportation, parks and recreation, commerce, justice, environmental protection, etc.), with representatives from these organizations serving as key personnel on the project.
These research projects will be part of the Multi-Sectoral Preventive Interventions (MSPI) Research Network, which will also include a Coordinating Center (RFA-OD-24-006).

NSF Update: The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a revised version of the Proposal & Awards Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (NSF 24-1), which “will be effective for proposals submitted on or due on or after May 20, 2024”.
Training Requirement for NSF Grants: The NSF PAPPG, effective last year, required all undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and other senior/key personnel to undergo responsible and ethical conduct of research (RECR) training. At this time, Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training is the institutional plan to meet the minimum requirements described in the PAPPG. If you are participating in or overseeing a NSF award, please be sure that all researchers are completing RECR training using CITI.

Funding amount: $40K
Application deadline: February 16, 2024, by 11:59 PM CST
IIN hubs are encouraged to partner/collaborate with each other and the IIN will do its best to support and facilitate. As an organization, the IIN Council will facilitate collaboration that can be incorporated into a unifying theme with the umbrella concept of “Sustaining Illinois.”
Sustaining Illinois has multiple meanings, including the broad economic, health-related, and social well-being of the state and its communities, and environmental sustainability of its food and water ecosystem, which includes addressing issues affecting groups who are underserved, under-represented, or under-resourced.
Sustaining Illinois elements are as follows:
(a) Education and Workforce Development: developing and sustaining the education of its citizens and developing a productive and inclusive workforce for the 21st century;
(b) Economic Development: sustaining and developing the economy of the state, including understanding how best to support the growth of diverse entrepreneurship and business formation in Illinois;
(c) Health and Wellness: sustaining and improving the general health and social wellness of all Illinois citizens, including local and regional communities.
(d) Water, Food, and Agriculture: sustaining the water supply, with 20% of the world’s freshwater supply in the shores of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Basin, the largest in the US and 2nd largest in the world, and enhancing the home to a national leader in food and agriculture; and
(e) Computing and Data: under the umbrella of Sustaining Illinois, there is a foundation of computing, big data, and artificial intelligence. This is an important area in its own right as Illinois develops its high- tech industry, but in this context, it is seen as an enabler for all other aspects of sustainability as articulated above.Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) Research and Development Science Team Seed Grants
