Ashlee Van Schyndel, MPH (she/her/hers) is a doctoral student in the department of Community Health Sciences (Maternal Child Health focus). Her research interests revolve around health policy, maternal child health, sexual and reproductive health, employment, survey methodology, and legal epidemiology. Many of her research questions center the idea of how [health] policies influence health experiences.
Currently, she is assisting as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Arden Handler's evaluation project for the Chicago Collaborative for Maternal Health Quality Improvement Initiative and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Dr. Alisa Velonis's section of CHSC 421: Community Health 1: Assessing, Promoting, and Improving Community Health.
Outside of her work as a graduate student, she is a trained abortion and pregnancy loss doula. Ashlee is formerly an Americorps VISTA, a member of the National Storytellers of Planned Parenthood cohort of 2020, and a Legislative Fellow for Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky. She has experience in advocacy work around sexual violence, Title X funding, and abortion access.
Upon graduation, Ashlee is interested in working for a policy research think tank or social research organization.
