Abhilasha Shrestha, PhD, is a research assistant professor in the division of environmental and occupational health sciences (EOHS) at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health (UIC SPH). Her research interests include studying the use of different indicator targets/genes for rapidly evaluating infectious agents in surface water.
Dr. Shrestha earned her bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2008 and then worked as an aquatic toxicologist in a private laboratory in Minnesota for over two years. She completed her master’s degree (MPH) from UIC SPH in 2013, focusing on environmental and occupational health sciences with a concentration in water quality and health. She got her PhD in Public Health from UIC SPH in May 2019. Her PhD dissertation research primarily focused on the application of rapid molecular methods for recreational water quality monitoring and implications for beach monitoring policies and public health protection in the Chicago area. Prior to joining the EOHS faculty, she worked as a Visiting Senior Research Specialist in the EOHS division at UIC SPH, operating and managing the largest and most sophisticated beach monitoring program in the United States.
