About
Angelo is a Senior Program Manager at AVAC where he's worked for almost 14 years. He leads efforts for capacity strengthening and engagement of key stakeholders including biomedical researchers, civil society, regulators, journalists and research communities in various countries where there is biomedical HIV prevention research and rollout. He is responsible for providing technical support to the AVAC team, partners and other stakeholder with a specific focus on expansion of activities and materials to build research literacy and eventual rollout of proven interventions in communities most affected by HIV and new pathogens such as COVID. He also works to create an enabling environment for rollout of newly proven prevention and treatment interventions by supporting partners and government departments of health and national AIDS councils to develop and implement relevant policies and programs. He has expertise working both at the grassroots in-country and at high levels on the global scene. He sits on various global technical working groups such as UNAIDS/WHO's TWG on voluntary medical male circumcision and communications working groups on HIV vaccines, microbicides and pre-exposure prophylaxis among others. He has merged his journalism and public health backgrounds to co-found and co-lead a highly impactful program to build trust between scientists and journalists and to improve the quality of journalism focusing on science and health in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and other countries. Angelo previously worked as the Communications Officer at the UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program in Uganda - a leading research center in Uganda. Before that he was the Assistant Public Relations Officer for The Mildmay Centre, a specialist HIV/AIDS treatment, care and training center.
