About
Elizabeth Fisher is a senior research specialist at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health in the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. Ms. Fisher is the Deputy Director of the Center for Healthy Work, a NIOSH-funded Center of Excellence for Total Worker Health. Her research interests lie at the intersection of worker health equity and public discourse around worker issues. As a Certified Health Education Specialist, she has successfully led and facilitated numerous occupational health and safety capacity-building initiatives for workers, their allies, and public health practitioners.
Ms. Fisher is deeply influenced by her family history, being the great-granddaughter of labor organizers who played a significant role in Chicago's garment workers' strikes in the early 20th century. These strikes were pivotal in advancing labor rights, improving working conditions, and establishing fair wages for garment workers, many of whom were women and immigrants. This legacy of activism guides Ms. Fisher's work today as she aims to ensure that worker health is recognized as a critical aspect of public health. With a strong focus on community engagement and relationship-building, Ms. Fisher has been involved in many of Chicago and Illinois' exciting collaborative efforts to improve worker well-being.
Ms. Fisher holds a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Sciences degree from Ohio University and a master’s degree in Communication, with a concentration in Health, Labor, and Media, from the University of Illinois Chicago.
