Dr. Doug Bruce, who passed away in June of 2024, is receiving the Dr. Naomi Morris Alumni Achievement Award for Community Health Sciences posthumously for his work as a brilliant public health scholar and dedicated educator.
At the time of his passing Doug was a professor of health sciences at DePaul University. He served as chair of the Department of Health Sciences and taught in the Master of Public Health program. He served as principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health. As a program and development consultant he worked with a number of organizations including the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Chicago Department of Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Agency for International Development.
His research focused on the health behavior of persons living with chronic conditions, receiving numerous grants for his work supporting local, national and international organizations.
Doug was raised in an Air Force family in Columbus, Mississippi. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Southern Methodist University. He earned a Master's of Social Work and a PhD in Public Health, both from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
His commitment to excellence and his dedication to his research and to his students have left a memorable legacy.
