Washington Post: Analyzing COVID-19 Risks for Coal Miners

Dr. Robert Cohen, director of the UIC Mining Education and Resource Center, was featured in the Washington Post describing the unique risks coal miners face during the COVID-19 outbreak, particularly miners with pre-existing respiratory diseases like Black Lung disease.

You’re coughing, you’re spitting, you’re wiping your nose. There’s no hand sanitizer along a seam of coal, nor a nearby washroom. Miners typically don’t wear respirator masks because they make it too difficult to do heavy labor.
