Proposed Metal Recycling Spurs Protests
The Guardian profiled the closing of General Iron on Chicago's north side and the proposed transition of operations to a southeast side location as a part of Southside Recycling. The new recycling plant will house a metal shredder, which uses machinery known to produce hazardous dust particles that can cause severe heart and lung problems. SPH's Susan Buchanan, MD, clinical associate professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, profiled the human health challenges resulting from metal recycling operations.
