Pandemic Challenges in For-Profit Nursing Home

SPH's Lee Friedman, PhD, professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, was featured in a Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ) story on racial disparities in nursing home deaths in Chicago during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Friedman noted conditions in for-profit nursing homes were ripe for the spread of the virus.

The level of medical neglect [in for-profit nursing homes] that I was seeing, I knew it was going to translate to either poor protections in the facility for the residents [and] pressure on staff to work even if they’re sick, which leaves the residents at risk.
