FactCheck.org Review: Masks for All?

FactCheck.org reviewed the scientific claims regarding mask usage for the general public during the COVID-19 outbreak.  Margaret Sietsema, PhD '15, MS '11, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health studies, told the publication that if airborne transmission of COVID-19 is assumed, respirators are the best answer to contain airborne spread.  She also noted concern that widespread mask usage may discourage social distancing behavior.

I do not believe a mask would reduce transmission prior to being symptomatic because air will never choose a path of more resistance (going through the mask) – it will simply go around the mask.
