Candidate - Andrea Jackson-Sagredo

Andrea Jackson-Sagredo

As a Biostatistician and Ph.D. student at UIC I’m thrilled to be vying for the pivotal roles for three crucial positions within the Biostatistical Student Association: President, Vice President, and Treasurer. With over five years of professional experience and a decade of academic studies, I’ve honed my skills in predictive modeling, particularly focused on women’s sexual, reproductive, and maternal health and mental health studies. My dedication to uplifting and advocating for underserved communities is unwavering. Serving as a co-instructor for the quantitative methods section of SPH’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s Pre-Matriculation Program, collaborating with esteemed colleagues like Dean Dr. Lunaire Ford from the Graduate College, and assisting various professors as a research and teaching assistant, I’ve consistently strived to diversify our academic landscape and secure additional funding opportunities for students. My vision for the BSA aligns with its mission of fostering alumni connections, promoting networking, and advocating for student visibility within the global community. I aim to ensure that biostatistics students have a prominent voice in discussions shaping our department and university. By cultivating a sense of community and support among students, regardless of their degree level, I believe we can foster an environment where everyone feels empowered to seek guidance and contribute to meaningful change. My objective is straightforward: lead the BSA in championing the interests of biostatistics students, facilitating collaboration, and fostering a sense of belonging within our department. Together, I am eager to contribute to the advancement of our field and the success of our peers.

Candidate - Souvik Paul

Souvik Paul

Hey guys, Hope you’re doing excellent and wishing all of you to reach your life goals asap. I think all of you know me as Souvik. I’m a 2nd year PhD student in Biostatistics and want to appear for the BSA President position this year. The first time I met and got involved in BSA on 18 Aug 2022. I was delighted to have such an amazing Biostatistics family here in UIC. Now, I’m on the verge of the opportunity to lead the BSA team for the future. My plan is to create a biostatistics hub and to connect with our seniors who are currently in academia or industry. Not only to restricted to UIC, but I also want to build a strong network of biostatisticians around the USA, specifically in industry, in collaboration with BSA. My target is to invite biostatisticians outside UIC to give us a talk and an exposure to industry with cutting edge technologies. Mainly, my focus will be on internship because we all need it every year until graduation. Also, as we all are busy with our PhD work, RA work, or TA work, I will try to use the time so efficiently so that we’ll have the maximum benefits. Thank you!!

Candidate - Dana Chatila

No country is an island (well, some are, but anyway); we are interconnected in fighting today’s public health issues because what affects one region of the world impacts all of us one way or another. That’s why I have chosen to pursue global health in addition to my concentration, epi/bio, and to join like-minded students at SPH in GHSIG. I aspire to enhance global public health’s prominence as a topic of discussion and learn from the diverse perspectives of the members of this student organization. My previous experiences in leadership have prepared me well for the role of the Secretary. At my university in Lebanon, where I’m from, I was the secretary of Insight Club, a student organization that hosted intellectual discussions about controversial social issues in Lebanon. I collaborated with other board members in planning events and debates and communicated with the Office of Student Affairs about event proposals. The following year, I was the “Head of the Community” in the same organization, and my role was to plan more casual hangouts for the members of the club. As the secretary of GHSIG, I plan to contribute to raising awareness about various global health issues we face today by hosting panel discussions and workshops. I also aspire to present volunteering opportunities to GHSIG members by connecting them with various global health organizations in Chicago. Last but not least, I hope to host more cultural events at SPH where members can showcase their cultures and learn about the diversity of global health.
