To advance understanding and facilitate the recovery and wellbeing of those impacted by the train derailment and material hazards spill that occurred in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3, 2023, the National Academies’ Health and Medicine Division—in collaboration with the Division on Earth and Life Studies and the Transportation Research Board—hosted a virtual public workshop in November 2023. Participants, including those from impacted communities, explored short and long-term human health impacts from the train derailment incident and similar incidents involving the transportation of hazardous materials.

SPH’s Kristen Malecki, PhD, director of the division of environmental and occupational health sciences, is the chair of the committee leading the surveillance of environmental health impacts of the derailment.
