Analyzing emergency preparedness for flooding risks

SPH's Apostolis Sambanis, PhD '19, MS' 12, director of curriculum with the School's Emergency Management and Resilience Planning certificate program, was featured in an article from Great Lakes Now analyzing how Great Lakes states are faring in preparing for flood risks and extreme weather events.

Most people don’t realize a lot of the floodplain maps that were developed by the government, they were done years and years ago, and they’re not updated nearly enough. For example, as you develop an urban area, things change in the way the water is going to be diverted. So, it’s not constantly updated, like it should be, because there’s just not enough funding and resources.
