DrPH Support and Giving
Introduction
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), School of Public Health (SPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Leadership program have two scholarships and a program specific fund to allocate support to our program.
André Gilmore Stanley DrPH Scholarship in Equity
This scholarship was launched in 2021 to honor the memory of André Gilmore Stanley, a proud member of SPH’s 2016 DrPH cohort and a policy analyst for the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. Mr. Stanley had a deep commitment to continuously learn, keeping his knowledge and skills relevant to today’s complex public health challenges. With his deep experience and strong interest in tobacco control, his research passion focused more on issues of equity and anti-racism, and the need to further explore and create solutions for police violence against the Black population. Ultimately, he desired to create health communities for all through a new culture of health. This scholarship will provide financial support to UIC SPH DrPH students in good academic standing who express a clear vision for action to address health equity, particularly racism, as a public health issue.

Leslie’s dissertation examines the collaborative dynamics of an academic-led study team with particular attention to the actors involved, the distribution of roles and power, and the structural and contextual factors that enable or impede collective action. Through a readiness assessment of the study team’s capacity to convene a collaborative as part of their research process, in addition to an analysis of collaboration among and between the Memphis and Nashville HIV communities of practice, her dissertation aims to identify opportunities and provide recommendations which foster equity-centered research practices.
Equity is central to public health’s purpose, and to advancing health equity. Unfortunately, much of the field’s approach to addressing inequity is still rooted in the biomedical model of the 20th century which privileges individual-level behavior change. And yet, transformative, long-term change for persistent challenges requires a systems change approach. Alexandra aims to study the organizational characteristics and processes that foster systems change to advance equity among Local Health Departments, given their unique role in shaping community health and their charge to address health inequities. The implications of this study aim to help address this gap and provide practice-informed learnings.
DrPH Equity, Health, and Racial Justice
This fund is designed to support Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) students whose academic work reflects a strong commitment to advancing equity, promoting health, and addressing racial justice. It provides financial assistance to students who are presenting scholarly or research projects that fulfill program requirements and demonstrate leadership aimed at systemic change. Eligible projects should contribute to the development of innovative solutions that dismantle structural inequities and promote health justice across communities. The fund seeks to empower emerging public health leaders who are working to create inclusive, equitable systems and policies that improve outcomes for historically marginalized populations.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are known as trusted community messengers who bridge gaps in care to address population health challenges, establish community connections, and advance anti-racism and health equity. Traci’s dissertation research will explore the ways in which CHWs are engaged in social care coordination (i.e., roles, responsibilities, facilitating factors that enhance their work) across sectors working to improve health outcomes among high-risk and historically marginalized participant populations. This research will focus on organizations across Chicago that have employed CHWs to conduct care coordination activities, an opportunity that provides an avenue to understand effective models for CHWs as a solution to embedding public health prevention and health equity across sectors.
