Climate Change

Many health conditions are tied to climate.  These include:

  • Diseases spread by mosquitos (like West Nile Virus and Zika) and ticks (like Lyme disease)
  • Heat waves
  • Diseases linked to flooding, like mold damage, intestinal infections caused by polluted drinking water, and emotional distress
  • Asthma attacks caused by high levels of pollen and ozone

The US CDC developed the Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework to help health department prepare for those and other health problems that are expected to become more frequent and more severe as climate continues to change.

  • Faculty and staff at the UIC School of Public Health are implementing the BRACE framework on behalf of the Illinois Department of Public Health
  • The UIC team assists with emergency preparedness, climate literacy, heat wave alerts, and data analysis for the State and for local health departments in Illinois.
