Joan Kennelly SPH Global Health Initiative Committee.

Joan F. Kennelly, PhD, MPH is Research Assistant Professor, Community Health Sciences.  She serves as a consultant to the Chicago Department of Public Health.

 Courses taught: Dr. Kennelly coordinates the Fall MCH Seminar, Concepts of Leadership and Underlying Assumptions of Public Health Practice.

 Areas of interest: Dr. Kennelly’s research interests relate broadly to the social determinants of population health and illness (particularly for women and children), disparities across population groups, and the effect of local contexts.  Her interests also include the influence of theoretical frameworks and underlying assumptions on the development of research, policy, and practice, as well as the content and quality of available data.

 Other: Dr. Kennelly is actively involved in service activities on behalf of public health and maternal and child health in particular, from the local community to the national level.  She is a member of the Voices for Illinois Children KIDS COUNT Advisory Board, an associate member of the Association of MCH Programs Data Committee, and serves as chair of the Curriculum Review Task Force for the UIC MCHP Advisory Committee.  Dr. Kennelly is also an MCH Section Councilor in APHA and serves on the National Action Alliance, to build MCH data capacity as a representative of the Association of Teachers for MCH.
