Research Training and Career Development Program

The Research Training and Career Development Program (RTCP) is an eight-week summer program for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in exploring potential careers in the health sciences, and to familiarize them with biomedical research opportunities. Participants will be exposed to issues related to health disparities and health equity, and the impact these have on patient care, health promotion, and prevention. During RTCP participants will work with a faculty mentor to develop a research project on a topic of interest.The purpose of this program is to give participants research experience and to help them develop their research skills.  Please note, this is not a residential program, as such housing will not be offered as a part of this program.


  • Undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the health sciences.

  • To be competitive, applicant should have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0

  • Applicant must self-identify as coming from an economically and educationally disadvantaged background.

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; documentation may be requested.

  • Documentation to support your eligibility may be requested.

  •  Program participants cannot be registered or planning to register for any academic courses during program.



  • A current resume or CV.

  • Transcripts from ALL undergraduate or graduate institutions attended.  Transcripts may be official or unofficial, and can be uploaded at the end of this application.

  • One recommendation letter from a former or current college advisor, college professor, or counselor. Recommendations should be sealed and signed across the envelope seal by the person writing the recommendation or may be emailed directly from the recommender to this email kpjohn@uic.eduBelow is the contact information for the program:

  • Application packet deadline: Monday, January 22, 2018

  • Notification of admission decisions: Early March 2018

  • Start of summer program: Wednesday, May 30, 2018

  • End of summer program and final presentations: Friday, July 27, 2018
