Pre-Public Health Requirements

Prerequisites Overview

Students interested in pursuing the BA in Public Health must first complete 60 hours of prerequisite general education course work at UIC or another college or university including three prerequisite courses in public health—PUBH 100: Health and the Public, PUBH 110: Public Health and Global Societies, and PUBH 120: Public Health and the Study of Disease and Epidemics. Please note that while successful applicants to the program typically have a GPA of at least a 2.75/4.00, there are four courses which must be completed with B grades or higher (PUBH 100, PUBH 110, PUBH 120, and the Quantitative Reasoning requirement). If admitted to the program, students will then complete an additional 60 hours of major course work. Admission to the program is selective and completion of the prerequisite course work does not guarantee admission.

PUBH 100: Health and the Public: Students will examine both historical and contemporary public health stories focusing on the United States to begin to understand the contexts, systems, professions, tools, and skills associated with the public health enterprise. (B grade or higher required in this course)

Note: This course may be used to satisfy the Individual and Society or US Society General Education requirement below.

PUBH 110: Public Health and Global Societies: Introduces students to global public health through an exploration of health challenges from the local population to global society perspectives. Field trip required at a nominal fee. (B grade or higher required in this course)

Note: This course may be used to satisfy the Individual and Society or World Cultures General Education requirement below.

PUBH 120: Public Health and the Study of Disease and Epidemics: Introduces basic principles surrounding the distribution of disease and epidemics in human populations. Through lectures and field exercises, students will learn fundamentals of epidemiology, the basic science of public health.  Natural World - No Lab course. (B grade or higher required in this course)

Analyzing the Natural World: 2 courses required, including PUBH 120 (see above) and a life science course with lab. For the life science course with lab, choose from the following courses approved for Analyzing the Natural World with Lab—ANTH 105, BIOS 100, BIOS 101, or BIOS 104.

**Students should consult the General Education section of the undergraduate catalog for a list of approved courses in this category. All students must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of General Education course work with at least one course from each of the six General Education categories.
