Applying to the BA in Public Health

BA IN PUBLIC HEALTH ADMISSIONS PROCESS

The Bachelor of Arts in Public Health is a junior entry program in which students acquire an array of skills that can be applied to many forms of inquiry, analysis, scientific and moral reasoning, and practice. Students interested in pursuing the BA in Public Health complete 60 hours of prerequisite course work at UIC or another college or university and then if admitted to the program, an additional 60 hours of major course work. Admission to the program is selective and completion of the prerequisite course work does not guarantee admission.

Current UIC students or transfer students from other institutions who will have completed all of the prerequisite course work prior to their desired term of admission may apply directly to the Public Health major in the School of Public Health.  As the major course work sequence begins only in the fall semester, students typically apply in the spring semester of their sophomore year for admission the following fall semester.

Current UIC students or transfer students from other institutions who will not have completed all of the prerequisite course work prior to their desired term of admission may apply to the Public Health - Undecided (Pre-Public Health) program in the School of Public Health. If admitted, students must then successfully complete the remaining prerequisites prior to entering the full major and beginning the major course work.

For a broad overview of the admissions process, please review the information below or download our Application Checklist.

ADMISSIONS OVERVIEW

1.  Admission to the BA in Public Health is selective and dependent on the availability of space.

2.  For fullest consideration, applicants must demonstrate evidence of successful completion or pending completion before matriculation of the 60 semester hours of general education prerequisite course work outlined on the Prerequisite Self-Evaluation Form below. This course work reflects the completion of PUBH 100, PUBH 110, and PUBH 120 or equivalent courses* with grades of B or better in each.

3.  For fullest consideration, a cumulative GPA of 2.75/4.00 or higher (UIC GPA and UIC + Transfer Credit GPA) is recommended but does not guarantee admission.

4.  As the BA in Public Health is a junior entry program, first-year students may apply for admission to the Public Health - Undecided (Pre-Public Health) program within the School of Public Health where they can then complete the prerequisite course work necessary for future admission to the full major.

5.  Current UIC students or transfer students from other institutions who will have completed all of the prerequisite course work prior to their desired term of admission may apply directly to the Public Health major in the School of Public Health. Note: The program will consider applicants to the major who have not yet completed PUBH 110: Public Health and Global Societies or their full foreign language sequence who submit a written Request for Prerequisite Exception with their application. Students who are admitted to the major without PUBH 110 completed must enroll in PUBH 110 during their first semester in the School of Public Health and a earn B grade or higher in order to continue in the program.

6. Please note that completion of degree requirements for the BA in Public Health will still take a minimum of two additional years once beginning the major course work due to course sequencing.

*To determine if a course is an equivalent, the student must submit a course syllabus for review by the Curriculum Committee well in advance of the application deadline.
