UIC SPH Celebrates its 40th Anniversary
Greetings from UIC SPH,
The 2012/13 academic year marks the UIC School of Public Health's 40th anniversary! Throughout the past 40 years, UIC SPH has accomplished many things. We opened our doors in 1972 when we had just 22 faculty, 18 students and one degree program: the Master of Public Health. Today, we have over 100 faculty, 600 students, 4,000 alumni, and Master and Doctor degree programs in 4 division concentrations. We also offer several joint degree options and online distant learning opportunities. We’ve certainly come a long way!
Public health issues have changed drastically over the past 4 decades, but our commitment to teaching, research and service has remained consistent. Our research has grown exponentially since the school’s beginning and our faculty and students have conducted pioneering investigations that have improved the quality of air we breathe in Illinois, radically reduced violence around the world, slowed the spread of HIV/AIDS, and contributed to the health of the aging population.
As a UIC SPH alumnus or friend, you have much to be proud of! I enjoyed meeting so many alumni, from various classes, at our gala on April 13, 2013. We had over 700 people celebrate with us at The Field Museum! This was one of the largest alumni events in UIC's history! Many thanks to our gala sponsors: Health Nautica, Illinois Department of Public Health, Erie Family Health Center, UIC's institute for Health Research and Policy, DeBrand Fine Chocolates, DAV Productions, UIC Urban Health Program, Illinois Public Health Association, and the UIC SPH Alumni Board.
We've been hearing from many alumni who've contacted us during this celebration year. Some alumni have shared news of their accomplishments since graduation. Others have approached us about making a donation to the school in honor of its anniversary. Please contact our Office of Advancement at SPHAdvancement@uic.edu because we want to hear from you!
